Walking can support great health outcomes. Walking, particularly for older people is an essential and safe way for people to get around. As other transport options drop away walking can help older people stay connected and engaged. Join the Heart Foundation as they undertake a practical application of the Healthy Active Ageing checklist, to observe and explore features within the built environment that aid or hinder a city to be age friendly. By addressing the considerations in the checklist, you will learn how we can create more walkable environments, which help older people to be more active longer.
The Heart Foundation has, since 1959, been fighting the single biggest killer of Australians – heart disease. Almost 1.5 million of us live with heart disease and each year more than 55,000 Australians suffer a heart attack. One of the keyways of improving heart health is to increase physical activity levels – and we know that improving the design of our cities, towns, streets and buildings makes it easier for Australians to lead heart-healthy lives. The Heart Foundation has championed improvements in our built environment for decades now. The most recent research benefits older people in our community.
